Vinyl tile
Vinyl asbestos tile that stays whole is nonfriable by the agency’s definition. Lift each tile gently instead of breaking it, then place it in a container labeled nonfriable asbestos waste.
Typical cost in Redmond
Vinyl tile, sheet vinyl and the black adhesive under them can contain asbestos in houses and apartments from the 1970s and earlier. Each layer is sampled, and the flooring is then lifted so the tile is not smashed or ground into dust. In an older Redmond bathroom or kitchen, a newer floor may cover an older one.
The deciding point is whether the tile stays in one piece. If it does, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency classes it as nonfriable and asks for no notice, provided no one sands, grinds or saws it. We lift floors in Redmond, Cottage Lake and Medina.

The adhesive is tested apart from the tile. Dry scraping or grinding turns it to dust, and the agency then handles it as friable with the full work rules, so the method matters as much as the result.
Ask about the backing, not the surface. Felt or paper under sheet vinyl that turns to powder when you crush it by hand is friable in the agency’s terms. A lab sample answers the question.
Carpet, laminate or new vinyl can cover an older floor. Every layer your project lifts gets its own sample, and an undisturbed layer can be covered over.
Floors can hold surprises under the top layer.
Ask what lies under the top floor before you set a date. The number of layers changes how long the work takes and how much waste there is.
Sanding, grinding and dry sweeping spread fibers, and none belongs in a safe removal. The work is slow and careful by design.
Bagged and labeled pieces go to an authorized site, named in the home page FAQ. Ring the site first about its paperwork and fees.
